Grateful Shelter Pup Forms Sweet Bond With Volunteer After Being Left Behind

Pongo was still a young dog when his world turned upside down. The person he trusted the most left him behind in an apartment, vanishing without a word.
He had no way of understanding why he had been abandoned. All he felt was the aching desire to be with his owner again. When the landlord found Pongo alone, they brought him to the Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley, a shelter located in New Kensington, Pennsylvania.
From the moment he arrived, the staff tried to ease his sorrow. They showered him with love, hoping to convince the heartbroken pup that better days were ahead.
He Found Joy In The Little Adventures

Pongo, a three-year-old dog full of energy, needed more than just love. He needed space to run, play, and feel free. The shelter made sure he had regular walks, but one volunteer went even further.
Danielle Baughman, a kindhearted shelter volunteer, made it her mission to give Pongo the experiences he longed for. She started taking him on outings, letting him enjoy time away from his kennel.
Whether at the park, at her home playing with her cat, or splashing around in a pool with another dog who had already been adopted, these trips brought happiness to Pongo’s life.

Each time they returned from an adventure, Pongo would gently rest his head on Baughman’s shoulder and give her a kiss, as if to say thank you for remembering him.
Baughman often shares moments like these on TikTok to increase visibility for shelter dogs. One touching clip of Pongo showed him snuggling close to her, with a caption that read, “He always says thank you for our adventures.”
Still Waiting For A Real Home

Although Pongo has captured hearts online, he’s now spent nearly two years at the shelter. Despite a few adoption inquiries, he’s still searching for a family of his own.
Nights are the hardest for him. He becomes anxious and tries to leave his kennel just to be near other dogs. To keep him safe, the shelter eventually built him a special, secure space.

Visitors often see Pongo jumping excitedly when they walk by, which may give the wrong impression. Baughman believes this behavior makes him seem too wild, even though he behaves calmly outside the kennel.
Even after a joyful day out, he always has to return to the shelter and sleep alone again.

Pongo dreams of finding a family that enjoys outdoor activities and can give him the time and space to adjust. He doesn’t ask for much—just someone willing to love him and include him in their life.
Until that day comes, he continues to hope for his happy ending, where the adventures never have to stop.
